About Merthyr Tydfil Angling Alliance
Merthyr Tydfil Angling Alliance (MTAA) was formed in 1967 from two Merthyr clubs and calls itself Wales’ largest multidiscipline angling club, with game and coarse fishing on rivers, reservoirs, ponds and a stretch of the Brecon Canal. Its game water includes about 14 miles of the Taff, mostly both banks, which the committee stopped stocking so that it has returned to a natural fishery of wild brown trout. The Taf Fechan above the Blue Pool is a wild trout fishery, fly only, catch and release with barbless hooks. The club also holds the Taf Fawr up to Cefn Cemetery, the Tarell, a stretch of the Wye at Red Rail and four stretches of the Usk, and fishes Cantref, Talybont, Pontsticill and Dolygaer reservoirs.
Anyone can buy a week permit before fishing, from the shops and post offices on the club’s tickets page (for example The Bait Shack in Merthyr Tydfil), at £30 for Dolygaer and Pontsticill reservoirs, the Penywern ponds, the Brecon Canal and Cyfarthfa Lake, or £40 for Cantref Reservoir, the Taff and Taf Fechan, Talybont Reservoir and the Mardy stretch of the Usk. Members can also buy guest tickets for friends and family. The Fishing Passport sells day tickets on part of the Taff and Taf Fawr, and on the Taf Fechan.
Full membership runs for 12 months from 25 January: adult £70, senior citizen £45 and junior (12 to 16) £20, with under 12s free but still needing to apply, a Brecon Canal only membership at £20 and a winter ticket at £40 for 1 September to 25 January. Membership is at the committee’s discretion and joining is online or at The Bait Shack. A rod licence is needed on club waters. The club runs fly casting clinics and about 50 matches a year.
