About Pontsticill and Dolygaer Reservoirs
Dolygaer and Pontsticill are the pair of reservoirs above Merthyr Tydfil that Merthyr Tydfil Angling Alliance fishes, and the club’s rulebook gives one set of rules for the two waters. This listing describes the trout fishing only; the reservoirs also have a coarse and pike fishery that the rulebook covers separately.
The trout season runs from 20 March to 17 October, with worm, artificial spinner and fly allowed, two trout a rod a day and a 10 inch size limit. Fishing is from sunrise to one hour after sunset and the club allows only one rod for trout. The main Pontsticill dam and the water in front of the sailing club are off limits, and the nature reserve at the end of Dolygaer is fly only.
The club’s week permit for these reservoirs, which also covers the Penywern ponds, the Brecon Canal and Cyfarthfa Lake, costs £30. A member can guest a friend on an adult ticket at £8 a day. Tickets must be bought before fishing from the club’s distributors. The reservoirs straddle the Merthyr Tydfil and Powys boundary and the position shown is approximate.
