About Mountain Ash Fly Fishers’ Association
Mountain Ash Fly Fishers’ Association (MAFFA) was formed in 1958 to promote fly fishing, and fishes Penderyn Reservoir near Hirwaun and Ystradfellte Reservoir in the Brecon Beacons. It describes itself as one of Wales’ leading fly fishing clubs, with a strong competition section and a roll of honour of past and present internationals. The club says its waters are for sporting fly fishers rather than anglers who want to fill a bag, with catch and release encouraged.
Membership for the 2026 season is £140, or £90 for 2025 members renewing, £20 for youths aged 16 to 18 and £6 for a non fishing member, and juniors under 16 fish free with a member. Members apply or renew by post to the membership secretary, at the address on the club’s tickets page, and the club says it makes a place available to a new member if someone does not renew. Non members can buy a day ticket for £20 from Hirwaun Post Office, which is closed on Sundays so tickets should be bought in advance. A rod licence is needed.
