About Rossett and Gresford Flyfishers’ Club
Rossett and Gresford Flyfishers’ Club was founded in 1906 as the Rossett and Gresford Angling Association and describes itself as one of the oldest continuously functioning fishing clubs in Wales. It manages about two and a half miles of the River Alyn, from the railway bridge in Rossett upstream to Wormswood at Gresford, where open meadow banks give way to wilder stretches through mature woodland. The Alyn is a small rain fed river with alkaline water, and the club fishes it for wild brown trout and, since 2008, grayling, which are now breeding.
The club’s water is fly only with barbless or de-barbed hooks, and the club suggests a rod of no more than 8ft with a floating line of no more than 5 weight. Membership is capped at 130 and the club says its optimum is 100 to 120. Full membership for the 2026 season is £55 with no joining fee, £5 for juniors under 16 and for family members living at the same address as a full member, and free for under 13s. New members apply through the club’s Clubmate page at any point in the season, and the club offers new members a one to one taster session with an experienced member.
Visitors can buy a day ticket for the club’s water at £20 a rod, through the Fishing Passport or the club’s Clubmate page, with at most two rods a day. Anglers fish at their own risk and a Natural Resources Wales rod licence is expected.
