About River Alyn, Rossett and Gresford Flyfishers
This is about two and a half miles of the River Alyn, from the railway bridge at Rossett upstream to Wormswood at Gresford, managed by Rossett and Gresford Flyfishers’ Club. The Alyn rises on the Llandegla moors and runs about 30 miles to the Dee, through a limestone gorge at Loggerheads, so the water is alkaline, which is unusual in Wales. Here it is a small rain fed river with a stone or gravel bed. The banks run from open meadows to wilder stretches through mature woodland, and a short length above Rossett weir is right bank only.
The fishing is for wild brown trout and, since 2008, grayling, which are now breeding. Salmon and sea trout are seen scaling Rossett weir each year but rarely stay. The club suggests a rod of no more than 8ft with a floating line of no more than 5 weight, a well presented dry fly (a size 14 Large Dark Olive early in the season, small CDC flies later) or small upstream nymphs, and waders, with care after winter floods. The river can gain two feet in a few hours after rain.
The fishing is fly only with barbless hooks and no dogs. Day tickets are £20 a rod, two rods a day, booked through the Fishing Passport or the club’s Clubmate page, and the club also takes members. The position shown is approximate, at the Rossett end, and comes from the Passport’s map marker.
