Rules and policies
Fishing rules for River Wear, Beat 1, Witton, Escomb and Bishop Auckland
A current Environment Agency rod licence is needed. Three classes of fishing are recognised: fly fishing with no more than three flies on a cast, bait fishing, and spinning. There is no spinning from 1 November to 30 April. Barbless or de-barbed hooks must be used when fishing for brown trout or grayling, and wherever possible for salmon and sea trout. All trout and grayling are returned. The bag limit is two migratory fish a day. All hen salmon and sea trout are returned after 31 August, and all migratory fish after 30 September. Maggots, keep nets, ground baiting and gaffs are not allowed, and lead core lines are not allowed. Anglers carry a landing net that meets the Environment Agency standard. On a pool where others are fishing, start at the head of the pool in your turn and take at least one pace downstream after every cast. The marked gravel run of Vinovium Pool is fly only for part of the season.
