About the River Wear

The River Wear rises in the North Pennines and runs about 60 miles, mostly through County Durham, to the North Sea at Sunderland. Its source is traditionally held to be at Wearhead, where Burnhope Burn and Killhope Burn meet. It runs east through Weardale, then turns south east and north east around Bishop Auckland and Durham, where it flows through a steep, wooded valley. The Gaunless and the Browney are its two largest tributaries.
