About Lake Vyrnwy
Lake Vyrnwy is a reservoir in the hills of Powys that the Victorians stocked with 40,000 Loch Leven trout. Lake Vyrnwy Hotel and Spa sells fishing on it and describes it as the largest wild trout fishery in England and Wales, fished for over a hundred years.
Fishing is fly only and from a boat, usually drifting loch style with three flies. The hotel’s tip for early season is dark wet flies in size 10 or 12, with lighter patterns such as an Invicta or a Peter Ross later on sunny days. The bag limit is four fish a rod: after that fish must be released, using barbless hooks. Lifejackets must be worn at all times and are mandatory. Fishing depends on the weather.
A boat day is £45 a rod, or £60 for two rods sharing, a half day is £35 a rod or £45 for two, and an evening after 5pm is £19.50 a rod, all including the battery and engine. Residents can book two days for £78 for one rod or £105 for two. Under 16s fish free with an adult rod. The season runs to mid October.
