About Rutland Water Reservoir
Rutland Water is fished as one water, from both bank and boat, for stocked rainbow and brown trout. The 2026 season runs from 14 March 2026 to 31 January 2027.
Anglian Water Parks plan to stock 71,000 rainbow and brown trout into Rutland Water in 2026, at regular intervals from February, mostly at 750 grams and 900 grams. Every year anglers catch overwintered, grown on trout of 4lb to 10lb or more, and grown on brown trout are a feature in October and November, from bank and boat. The anglers’ map names more than fifty places to fish, from Burley Reach and the Barnsdale bays to Whitwell Creek, the Normanton frontage and North Arm Shallows, and marks the stretches closed to bank fishing, some all year and some from 1 November to 31 March, and the areas closed to boats, including a 50 metre margin from the nature reserve bank. The Fishing Lodge is at Normanton, on the south shore.
Boats can be hired by the day for £32, by the half day for £25, as a single-manned day boat for £20 or half day for £17, and after 6pm for £17. A wheelyboat is available to Blue Badge holders at £23. There is a 10% surcharge on boats that are not booked in advance, and evening boats can only be booked on the day, subject to availability. Accompanied children can fish free within the rules and limits of the adult permit, with age and wind speed limits on boat fishing.
Day permits cover eight fish plus catch and release at £40, or four fish plus catch and release at £34, with a senior citizen permit at the four fish price allowing six fish. A zero-kill sporting permit at £28 is fished on barbless flies. Season permits are sold in four grades, from the Sporting permit at £720 up to Gold at £1,330, as four water tickets. All brown trout must be returned alive.
