About Clettwr
The Clettwr gets its name from the Welsh for rough water, and the stream is a mix of gorges, riffles, pools and minor falls. It runs off the slopes of Cefn Clawdd and enters the Wye at Erwood, seven and a half miles south of Builth Wells. For its size it holds a good population of trout, and it benefits from two Foundation fish passes.
The Passport calls it real mountain stream fishing and a challenge to the most hardy, and says it can be extremely rewarding. Go with a small brook rod of six and a half to seven and a half feet rated 2 to 4 weight, and be prepared for a climb, difficult going and perhaps a 30 minute trek to the start.
It is fly fishing only, the limit is two trout per rod, and any trout under 9 inches must be returned. Dogs are not allowed. The stream holds native white-clawed crayfish, so waders, nets and tackle must be sprayed with Virkon before and after fishing. It is a Wild Stream beat: it is booked through the Fishing Passport, or fished on a Wild Stream Season Permit.
