About Darlington Brown Trout AA, River Lune
This is about 1500 metres (just under a mile) of the north bank of the small River Lune in Teesdale, from the reservoir holding pool downstream to the mouth of the Lune, run by the Darlington Brown Trout Angling Association. The Passport describes adventurous fishing for brown trout, grayling and an occasional salmon, with a good mix of pocket water and small pools. The Lune is completely tree lined and the page calls the character of the water purposefully unkept, so the fishing is challenging. It is lightly fished, and it is fly and worm only.
The easiest fishing is up and down stream of the railway viaduct at the lower end, and it gets trickier the closer you go to the reservoir. Wading difficulty is average, a wading staff is advisable and care is needed near the steep banks. The river can rise fast, so check the online river levels and the weather before you go. The page suggests single flies, with upstream nymphing and the dry fly, or the duo, on a 7ft 6in or 8ft rod rated 3 or 4.
Dogs are not allowed. Up to four tickets are sold a day. The salmon, river trout and winter grayling day tickets each cost £8. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
