About Lower Tarrell
Lower Tarrell is 1.75 miles of double bank on the lower Tarrell, which flows from the Brecon Beacons through the western side of Brecon into the Usk. The Passport calls it a key Usk spawning tributary that also produces some excellent trout up to 2 pounds, with the average fish around 10 to 12 inches. Chest waders are recommended because there are a few deep pools, but thigh waders will let you fish most of the beat.
The beat has a healthy population of native crayfish. There was an outbreak of crayfish plague on the lower Irfon in July 2024, so visitors must guard against cross contamination: waders, nets and tackle should be sprayed with Virkon before and after fishing. It is fly fishing only, all species are catch and release, and the beat has a wash-off policy. Dogs are allowed if kept under control. It is a Wild Stream beat: it is booked through the Fishing Passport, or fished on a Wild Stream Season Permit.
