About Ogwen Valley Angling Association
Ogwen Valley Angling Association fishes the Afon Ogwen at Bethesda and four upland lakes in Eryri (Snowdonia). Its website describes two main river beats, each about two miles of double bank fishing, on a river of around seven miles. It says the Ogwen is a classic spate river with good sea trout fishing throughout the season and a strong run of salmon and grilse, and that wild brown trout live in the main river and its small upland tributaries.
The upper section runs from Llyn Ogwen down the Ogwen Falls to Ty’n y Maes Bridge, the only part of the river holding brown trout alone, and closes to fishing after 30 September. The lower section runs from the bridge below Ogwen Bank caravan park (Pont y Twr) past Bethesda and Coetmor Bridge to Halfway Bridge. The four lakes are Llyn Ogwen, which the club stocks regularly with rainbow trout of 1 to 2lb and which also holds natural brown trout, Llyn Idwal, Llyn Bochlwyd, where there are wild brown trout up to about half a pound, and Ffynnon Lloer, the highest at 673 metres, where the fishing is fly only.
Day and week tickets for all waters are sold through the Fishing Passport and, for cash or cheque, at Londis and Barbwr Ogwen in Bethesda; the Ogwen Falls Café takes cards. Season tickets and membership are bought on the club’s website, which lists prices for adults, pensioners and young people. Boats on Llyn Ogwen are for full members. The club’s rules say salmon must be returned, trout must be 8 inches or more to be kept, no more than four fish may be kept a day on Llyn Ogwen, and dogs are not allowed on the waters.
