About fly fishing in Ceredigion
Ceredigion fly fishing on FishingBeats is upland lakes, the Teifi and its tributary the Camddwr, and the Rheidol, Ystwyth and Aeron, which run to Cardigan Bay. We list only part of the county. Nearly everything is sold by a club or association, each with its own rules, tickets and seasons.
The Fishing Passport is an online booking system run on a not for profit basis by the Wye and Usk Foundation. It doesn’t own or lease any water; each beat stays with its owner. Here it sells Aberystwyth Angling Association’s lakes and ponds, mostly wild brown trout that must be returned. Llyn Craigypistyll is lightly fished because it is hard to reach, and Llyn Llygad Rheidol, at 500m, is the highest and most remote. Llyn Frongoch is fly only with stocked rainbows, open to Passport holders on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays only. A day ticket covers the association’s other waters on the same date, and prices load by date on the booking page.
Tregaron Angling Association fishes the Teifi Pools, three unstocked lakes in the Cambrian Mountains at the source of the Teifi: Llyn Teifi, Llyn Hir and Llyn Egnant. Llyn Berwyn is a restored mountain lake in the forestry, lightly stocked and fly only, and it opens on 1 April, a month after the club’s other waters. No more than four brown trout may be taken in a day, and fish under 23cm go back. Tickets are sold through Clubmate and the club’s ticket page shows no prices. Nine Oaks, near Llanarth, has three fly only trout lakes, the Derwen, the Weir and the Pallen, and one day ticket covers all three from dawn until dusk.
Tregaron Angling Association also has 17 miles of the upper Teifi in eight beats, with wild brown trout, sea trout (sewin) and some late run salmon, and 7 miles of the Camddwr. Its beat maps mark the pools and the club’s bank on the Teifi; for the Camddwr it gives no start or end, so the position we show is approximate. There is no spinning on its beats before 16 June. Lower down, Pontarddulais AA has about a mile of right bank just below Lampeter, very lightly fished, at £15 for 24 hours from 7am, so night fishing for sewin is possible. The Teifi Trout Association, founded in 1925, looks after the lower river in five beats, A to E. A daily permit is £30 until 31 August and £35 after, but it names its pools without saying which bank is which.
Aberystwyth Angling Association has 16 miles of the Rheidol from Devil’s Bridge to the sea, with around forty pools and double figure salmon and sewin. Hydro generation can raise the level in minutes, so wade with care. On the Ystwyth it holds the south bank from Gosen Bridge to the sea, with an adult season permit at £190 and a week permit at £132. Llanilar Angling Association has about twelve miles of the Ystwyth, where the Passport rates night fly fishing highest; it is club water, so exclusivity is not guaranteed. Aberaeron Town Angling Club has about 2 miles of the Aeron through the town at £20 a day. It suits an angler who will read each club’s rules first and doesn’t mind that most of the water is sold water by water.

Fish species in Ceredigion
What the beats above hold, and where else in England you can fish for the same species.
Three different kinds of operator, and most visitors want the first. A fishery or estate owns the water and sells you a day on it. A club or syndicate holds water for its members, sometimes with day tickets alongside. A guide or agent sells days on water somebody else owns, and often comes with you.

Finding fly fishing near you in Ceredigion
The map above plots Ceredigion's beats and fisheries against the county boundary, so you can see roughly how far a stretch is rather than just its name on a list. Tap a marker for a quick read on price and species before you go further. If you're weighing this county against somewhere else, or want to see every day-ticket beat in the country at once, the full beat map covers all of them.
A day ticket is usually a half day or a full day on the water, so it's worth weighing the drive against how much fishing you'll actually get out of it. A longer trip makes more sense for a full day than for two or three hours in the afternoon.
For scale, the River Teifi rises near Llyn Teifi, Cambrian Mountains, and the River Rheidol rises near Nant-y-moch, western flank of Plynlimon. Beats sit further downstream from there, not at the source itself. The map above is the more exact guide to which stretch is closest to you.
Fly fishing lessons and tuition in Ceredigion
FishingBeats doesn't list fly fishing schools or dedicated instructors: the agents and guides above are the ones selling day tickets and guided days on Ceredigion's beats. Some may be willing to teach alongside a day out even where it isn't sold as a separate product, so it's worth asking rather than assuming either way. That's a different thing from starting from scratch, though: a guided day generally assumes you can already cast, where a lesson teaches the cast itself, and most UK fly fishing lessons for that begin on a stillwater rather than a river. How tuition, guided days and courses fit together is covered on the agents page. Once you can put a fly out, easy beats rated for a first visit or beats where you can arrange a ghillie are a reasonable next step, and a few beginner-friendly beats to start on is worth reading before you book.
