About the River Amman
The River Amman, Afon Aman in Welsh, is a river of south Wales that rises on the Black Mountain and flows down the Amman Valley to join the River Loughor at Pantyffynnon. It gives its name to the town of Ammanford and to villages including Pontamman, Glanamman, Brynamman and Rhosamman.
The name is said to come from the Welsh word banw, meaning pig or piglet, for the way the river roots through the land. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the valley was a coal mining area, and the mines have now closed.
The Loughor, which it joins, was once a noted salmon and sea trout river.
