About the River Balder

The River Balder rises on Stainmore Common in the Pennines and runs about 14.5 miles east to join the River Tees at Cotherstone. For its first 2.5 miles it is Balder Beck, and the River Balder proper begins where it meets Black Beck. It then runs through three reservoirs in Baldersdale: Balderhead, Blackton and Hury. Until 1974 it was in the North Riding of Yorkshire, and it is now in County Durham.
