About the River Tees

The River Tees rises on the eastern slope of Cross Fell in the North Pennines and runs about 85 miles to the North Sea. In its upper reaches it passes Cow Green Reservoir, Cauldron Snout and High Force, then turns gentler below Middleton-in-Teesdale. It flows past Barnard Castle and on across the plain around Darlington. For much of its length it is the boundary between County Durham and North Yorkshire. Below the Tees Barrage, between Stockton-on-Tees and Middlesbrough, the river is tidal.
