About the River Deepdale Beck
Deepdale Beck is a small tributary of the River Tees in County Durham. It runs down Deepdale, a side valley of Teesdale just west of Barnard Castle, and joins the Tees close to the Deepdale Aqueduct. The lower valley is wooded and is a nature reserve, known for its birds and its otters. The old Deepdale Viaduct, which stood two miles west of the town, has been gone since 1963.
The beck holds wild brown trout. Monitoring has also shown salmon spawning in it in good numbers. It is heavily wooded in places and open in others, with deep holes and some bedrock, and it can rise quickly after rain, so it fishes best with a little water in it.
The water that is let is fly only and catch and release.
