About River Alwen, Maerdy
The Alwen is one of the upper Dee’s largest tributaries and joins the Dee at Corwen. The club has an upper and a lower beat on it and describes it as a beat for the wild brown trout angler, where members enjoy light tackle or Tenkara outfits. It also fishes well for salmon in the latter part of the season, and fishing is possible here when the main river is too high. The club warns that it is not for the faint-hearted because of the number of trees along the river, but says it holds some large brown trout. Fishing is single right bank, apart from a short section of double bank at the downstream end.
A small worm may be fished trotted or ledgered, and brown trout may be spun for, within the club’s tackle limits. There is no night fishing. This water is for members. The club’s 2026 rate for a new adult salmon member is £160 and for trout and grayling £100, each with a £70 joining fee. The beat lies near the village of Maerdy, and the position shown is approximate.
