About Frome Day Ticket Water
Dorchester Fishing Club’s day-ticket water is the main beats of the River Frome and their side streams, running both above and below Dorchester in Dorset. None of the water is stocked, so every fish here, Brown Trout, Grayling, is wild. The club itself dates back to 1877, growing out of an earlier Dorchester Angling Club founded in 1845, and first leased water here from the Duchy of Cornwall.
Fishing is by single upstream dry fly or nymph only, and dogs are not permitted along the riverbank. The trout season runs from April to mid-October, with grayling taking over from mid-October through to the end of February. Day tickets are sold within the trout season only, and then just on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and bank holidays, and there is a strict cap on numbers: forty-five tickets a year, two a day, with none issued between 16 May and 15 June, when the water is kept for members through the mayfly.
A three-day ticket is available for £140, useful if you can build a short trip around the fixed selling days. A single day costs £70. Bookings go through John Aplin, who handles day-ticket sales for the club. This is proper wild-fish fishing on a historic stretch, but the limited days and strict method mean it rewards planning ahead rather than a spontaneous visit.
