About Hanningfield Reservoir
Hanningfield is a large reservoir at West Hanningfield, near Chelmsford, run by Waterside Parks as an any method premier stillwater trout fishery. Waterside Parks stocks a minimum of 51,000 rainbow trout over the season, along with 1,000 home grown specimens, and says fish of 10lb and over are there to be caught.
You can fish from the top of the dam, from the natural bank or from one of 36 motorboats, and the fishery lists fly, lure and bait fishing. Only rainbow trout are kept; all other species go back. On the bank, the fishery points to the valve tower to the goldfish bowl on the main dam wall, and the peninsula to the inlet, as places where all methods work, and to Hall Point, Atlantis and the bird hide in Lodge Bay for boat anglers.
The site has a fishing lodge with a shop for rods, reels, tackle, clothing, worms and baits, and a café on the water. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, so dogs are not allowed, though assistance dogs are welcome. Day permits and boats are booked through Bookwhen, and boats must be booked in advance. The fishing is run for Essex and Suffolk Water and the sat nav postcode is CM3 8HX.
