About Honddu - R Usk
Honddu - R Usk is over 1¼ miles of right bank on the Honddu, a tributary of the Usk. This is not the Honddu that runs into the Monnow: it begins at Blaenhonddu on the Eppynt, the mountain that divides the Brecon Beacons from the Cambrian Mountains, and flows south to join the Usk at Brecon. The Passport calls it a picturesque trout stream and suggests a rod of 6.5 to 7.5 feet rated 2 to 3 weight.
The beat has a healthy population of native crayfish. There was an outbreak of crayfish plague on the lower Irfon in July 2024, so visitors must guard against cross contamination: waders, nets and tackle should be sprayed with Virkon before and after fishing. It is fly fishing only, two trout may be taken per rod and anything under 9 inches must be returned. Dogs are not allowed. It is a Wild Stream beat: it is booked through the Fishing Passport, or fished on a Wild Stream Season Permit.
