About Llyn Clywedog
Llyn Clywedog is a 615 acre reservoir on the headwaters of the River Severn, built in the late 1960s to supplement the river’s flow and ease flooding in the upper Severn valley. It sits just over 900 feet above sea level, which the association says makes winters hard and keeps the summer water cooler than on lowland reservoirs. Llanidloes and District Angling Association runs it as a trout fishery and stocks it weekly with rainbow and brown trout from its own farm, around 40,000 fish.
Most fishing is from boats. The association hires petrol motor boats and single person boats, and has a wheelyboat for disabled anglers; its rules also cover bank fishing along marked paths. Fishing is fly only. A full day is £29, an evening permit from 3pm is £20 with a three fish limit, and a full season is £420. Permits are sold at the fishing lodge at the boat moorings, and the 2026 season runs from 12 March to 30 November, with boats available until the end of November.
