About the River Severn

The River Severn, Afon Hafren in Welsh, is the longest river in Great Britain, at 220 miles. It rises on the Plynlimon massif in the Cambrian Mountains, at an altitude of 610 metres, close to the Ceredigion and Powys border near Llanidloes. Llanidloes is the first town on the river. It then runs through Caersws, Newtown and Welshpool and crosses into England, passing through Shropshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire, where Shrewsbury, Worcester and Gloucester lie on its course. It becomes the Severn Estuary after the Prince of Wales Bridge.
