Middle Moreton 1 pairs a length of the main river with Beat Three on the North Stream, the carrier that runs down the far side of the Moreton Estate's meadow, and it's worth understanding what that combination means for a day's fishing. The main river here carries itself like the middle Wylye: wide, with room to work a longer line and cover fish at distance. Cross the meadow to the carrier and the scale changes completely: it fishes closer to the Piddle, narrow and intimate, where a short cast and quiet wading count for more than reach. A rod with both beats effectively gets two different rivers on one ticket.

The estate is reckoned among the best of the Wessex fishing on the River Frome, and the water holds Brown Trout, Grayling, with an outside chance of a sea trout or salmon working through. Wading is essential across both the main river and the carrier, and all fishing is strictly catch and release.

The season runs mid May to 15 October, later and shorter than most of the Wessex beats, so it needs planning around rather than assuming. Booking is by rod numbers rather than a fixed party size: a single rod, or up to three who know each other, can take the beat early in the season, with pairs and larger groups, up to six rods on a date, given both beats together from June onward. The estate is in Dorset, a short drive from Lawrences Farm, and the hamlet of Moreton makes a good base, with its tea rooms, pub and the church whose windows were engraved by Laurence Whistler.

Day tickets start from £70.

The fishery and river

River

England's most westerly major chalk stream, the River Frome rises from St John's Well in the village of Evershot and runs for 35 miles through the heart of Dorset. From Evershot it passes through Cattistock, Maiden Newton, and Dorchester before broadening across a wide flood plain and meandering through West Stafford…
