The Moreton Estate's meadow carries the River Frome down one side and the North Stream carrier down the other, and Middle Moreton 2 is built around that layout: a length of main river plus Beat Four on the carrier. The two waters fish quite differently. The main river here is proper Frome water, comparable in scale to the middle Wylye, open enough for a longer line and searching water at distance. The North Stream, by contrast, is Piddle-sized: narrow enough that the fishing is close and deliberate, and where spooking a fish is far easier than covering one.

Splitting a day between the two is part of the appeal: the main river through the morning and the carrier for something more intimate in the afternoon, or the other way round. Both hold Brown Trout, Grayling, with an outside chance of a sea trout or salmon, and wading is essential on both waters. Everything is returned.

Note the season: mid May to 15 October, shorter than the standard Wessex calendar, so it pays to check dates before booking. Rod numbers are managed through the season, from a single rod or a small group of up to three early on, to pairs and larger parties taking both beats together, up to six rods, from June onward. The estate sits in Dorset, close to Lawrences Farm, and the hamlet of Moreton, with its tea rooms, pub and the church engraved by Laurence Whistler, is a good place to base a day.

Day tickets start from £70.

The fishery and river

River

England's most westerly major chalk stream, the River Frome rises from St John's Well in the village of Evershot and runs for 35 miles through the heart of Dorset. From Evershot it passes through Cattistock, Maiden Newton, and Dorchester before broadening across a wide flood plain and meandering through West Stafford…
