Mulberry Whin

Mulberry Whin sits on the Driffield Beck at Skerne, where the river has been farmed by the same family since 1940, now passing down to a fourth generation, Andrew and Gemma Dixon. Fishing Breaks has let the water since 2012. The river here meanders hard across the farmland, sharp, deep bends set against shallow gravel runs, with ranunculus and starwort weed thick through the summer months.

The beat runs over a mile of double bank, split into five separate beats, and rather than being handed a fixed stretch you choose which one to fish when you arrive. Wading is an option on Beats 4 and 5 only; the rest is fished from the bank. Fished by one to five rods, with larger groups available on request.

Fish are a mix of wild brown trout and grayling, topped up with Yorkshire-reared browns that run to over 3lb, so roughly half the stock here is wild. Local guide Dave Southall is available for half and full days, whether you want an introduction to the beat or a second pair of eyes on tricky water. He also holds the beat's record wild brown trout, an 8lb 5oz fish.

There's a three-star cabin on site, a WC, and parking a short walk from the river. No dogs are permitted, and it's worth knowing before you book that this is not a catch-and-release fishery: the take-home limit is two fish. Nearest station is Nafferton, three miles away. Day tickets start from £95 during the main season.
