About the River Bran (Usk)
The River Bran, Nant Brรขn in Welsh, is a short river that rises on the southern slopes of Mynydd Epynt and joins the Usk at Aberbrรขn, three miles west of Brecon. Its upper reaches lie inside the Sennybridge Training Area, and it runs past the hamlet of Llanfihangel Nant Brรขn on the way. Brรขn is the Welsh word for crow, which may refer to the dark colour of the water. It is not the Afon Brรขn that flows to the Tywi.
Like the other Usk tributaries it is a Special Area of Conservation, listed for its lampreys, twaite shad and bullhead. It is a small stream of bedrock channels, gravel and riffles with some deeper pools, fished with the fly for trout.
