About the River Usk

The River Usk rises on the northern slopes of the Black Mountain, in the west of the Brecon Beacons National Park, and runs about 78 miles to the Severn Estuary at Uskmouth. It passes Brecon and Crickhowell in Powys, then goes on through Monmouthshire by Abergavenny, Usk and Caerleon to Newport. The name comes from an old British word meaning abounding in fish, and the whole river is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
