About the River Cilieni
The River Cilieni, Afon Cilieni in Welsh, is a short river that rises on the southern slopes of Mynydd Epynt, with its upper reaches inside the Sennybridge Training Area. It runs through the hamlets of Pentre-bach and Pentreโr-felin to join the Usk about 2 km east of Sennybridge. The earthworks of a railway line that was meant to reach Llanwrtyd Wells, never finished, follow much of the valley.
Like the Usk and its other tributaries it is a Special Area of Conservation, listed for its lampreys, twaite shad and bullhead. It is a remote wild trout stream, narrow and meandering in its upper reaches, and it suits upstream fishing with the fly on very light tackle.
