About the River Crai
The River Crai is a tributary of the Usk. It rises in the Fforest Fawr part of the Brecon Beacons National Park and flows north. Its headwaters, called Blaen-crai, run for about 2 km into Crai Reservoir, and below the dam the river flows a further 8 km past the scattered settlement of Crai on its way to the Usk. Like the Usk and its other tributaries it is a Special Area of Conservation, listed for its lampreys, twaite shad, bullhead, Atlantic salmon and otter.
It is a small wild trout stream in a quiet valley, and it is fished with the fly.
