About the River Grwyne Fawr
The Grwyne Fawr rises at Blaen Grwyne Fawr, on the southern slopes of Rhos Dirion in the Black Mountains, and flows south east. Its flow is held back by the Grwyne Fawr Reservoir, and below the dam the river runs through Mynydd Du Forest. Further down the valley turns west near Partrishow, and the river is joined by the Grwyne Fechan near Llanbedr. It then runs south through Llangenny to meet the Usk at Glangrwyney. A section of the Grwyne Fawr forms the border between Powys and Monmouthshire.
The valley is sparsely populated and the river is a small, remote tributary of the Usk. It is fished with the fly for wild trout.
