About the River Tawe
The River Tawe is about 30 miles long. It rises below Llyn y Fan Fawr in the Black Mountain, the westernmost range of the Brecon Beacons National Park, and flows east at first before turning south, then south west, through Ystradgynlais, Ystalyfera, Pontardawe and Clydach to the sea at Swansea. Its main tributaries are the Afon Twrch and the Upper and Lower Clydach rivers. Only the upper river is in Powys.
Large salmon run up the Tawe to spawn, and trout are plentiful. The headwaters below Llyn y Fan are small wild brown trout water, fished with the fly, and the best of the trout fishing is usually in the afternoons in March, April and May.
