About the River Afon Twrch (Tawe)
The Afon Twrch rises on the Black Mountain, on the southern slopes of Bannau Sir Gaer and Fan Brycheiniog, and is soon joined by the Twrch Fechan. It runs about 9 miles, south west, then south and finally south east, to meet the Tawe at Ystalyfera. It forms the boundary between Powys and Carmarthenshire and, below Ystradowen, between Powys and Neath Port Talbot. Nant Gwys and Nant Llynfell are among its tributaries.
The Twrch is a small trout river, fished with the fly. The best of the fishing is in the afternoons in March, April and May, with March Brown and large dark olive hatches, and in summer it is in the evening, when the blue winged olive is the main hatch.
