About River Dee, Bala
This is Bala and District Angling Association’s Bala beat on the River Dee, below Llyn Tegid. The association describes the Dee as renowned for its grayling, especially in the upper reaches, and the river holds wild brown trout, grayling and migrating salmon and sea trout, with a few pike, perch and roach, mainly on the Bala stretch.
In the salmon season fishing on this beat is with fly only, including nymphs and bugs. Trotting with a worm is allowed from 18 October to 2 March, and there is no spinning at any time. Salmon must be returned. The club points to the Natural Resources Wales gauges and says 0.3m is a normal summer level with grayling fishing best around it, the river is getting fresh at 0.45m, conditions are difficult above 0.6m and at 1.0m and over it is unsuitable and may be dangerous. It calls those figures guides only.
The club names three places to park: the track by the Tryweryn bridge on the road to the sewerage works, which must not be blocked, a lay-by on the A494 about three quarters of a mile from Bala towards Corwen with steps down to the river, and Aerfen farm on the B4401. The association’s 2026 day ticket is £17.50 and a weekly ticket £50. The position shown is approximate and taken from the club’s own map.
