About the River Dee
The River Dee, Afon Dyfrdwy in Welsh, flows through North Wales and Cheshire. Most of it lies in Wales, with two sections forming the border and the stretch between Aldford and Saltney in England. It rises on the slopes of Dduallt above Llanuwchllyn in Snowdonia and, between its source and Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake), is known by its Welsh name.
Leaving Bala, the River Dee meets the Afon Tryweryn and passes through the Bala sluice gates, part of the Dee Regulation System that protects communities downstream from flooding. It skirts Llanfor, passes Llandderfel and its Grade II listed Pont Fawr, then trends north east through the Vale of Edeyrnion to Corwen and Llangollen before crossing into England, running through Chester and finishing in an estuary 14 miles long on the Irish Sea.
The river has long been famed as a mixed fishery, with salmon and trout fishing mostly in the upper waters and good coarse fishing in the lower reaches. Grayling are in the upper river as well. It is a Special Area of Conservation for its Atlantic salmon, and a major pollution incident in the late 1990s damaged the middle reaches, which have since largely recovered.
