About Greta Farm
Greta Farm is about 1.6 miles (2.7 kilometres) of wild brown trout fishing on the River Greta, a tributary of the Tees, with a real chance of a sea trout. The Passport describes it as virgin water with a real character. The first section runs from the meeting of waters between the Greta and Sleightholme Beck downstream for just under a mile (1.6 kilometres), some of it double bank. It is easy to wade, and the top section is not interrupted by trees, so there is generally a good background for casting. The second section starts at the main bridge below Bowes village and runs downstream for just over half a mile (1.1 kilometres). It is much harder to fish, with the first half kilometre heavily tree lined and the final section easier. Wading there is tricky and the banks are overgrown.
The page says the Greta fishes very well even at low summer levels, with free rising trout in the pools, and that in a wet summer there is a real chance of a sea trout from August onwards, with sea trout present at the back end. EA and Tees Rivers Trust monitoring has shown good numbers of sea trout in the upper Greta. For trout it suggests spiders and nymphs, but especially the dry fly, on a 7ft to 8ft rod rated 3 or 4, and for sea trout a slightly larger rod with low water doubles and singles such as Stoats Tails. Wading is of average difficulty and a wading staff is advisable, and there is bedrock, so watch for shelves. There may be electric fences and livestock in the fields.
The fishing is fly only with barbless hooks and strictly catch and release, dogs are not allowed and the beat has a wash-off policy. Up to three tickets are sold a day. The trout day ticket costs £10 and the sea trout day ticket £10. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
