About Dovedale, Leek and District Fly Fishing Association
This is Leek and District Fly Fishing Association’s three and a half mile stretch of the Dove through Dovedale, on the boundary between Staffordshire and Derbyshire. The association does not say where the stretch starts and ends, or which bank it fishes, so the position shown is approximate. Its page mentions Dove Holes, where the river slows and deepens beside two large limestone caves and gives good sport for those who like to fish the nymph, and Ravens Tor, the upper limit of the section above Dove Holes.
The river is spring fed and runs over limestone, through a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The association describes it as one of the most picturesque and important fly fishing rivers in the world, and says Izaak Walton and Charles Cotton are said to have fished here about 400 years ago. The water varies from meandering stretches with weirs, pools and faster glides to a straighter upper section with fast pockets, weirs and shallow pools.
This is members’ water. The association has a waiting list and no day tickets, and members can bring a guest on a guest ticket.
