About Llyn Brenig
Welsh Water describes Llyn Brenig as one of the best top of the water trout fisheries in the UK, with 23km of shoreline. It is stocked weekly from March to September with rainbow trout, and some brown trout, which Welsh Water rears on site. Fishing is by artificial fly or a dapped natural insect, from the bank or from Welsh Water’s own boats. Private boats are not allowed.
A full day permit for 2026 is £28.50, with up to six fish to be kept and brown trout returned, and a part day starting at 12:00 is £22. Concessions are £27 and £21, a junior full day is £13 for three fish, and winter trout days from 5 October 2026 are £16 for three fish. A season ticket for Llyn Brenig and Llyn Aled Uchaf is £425. Boats seat up to two anglers: £30 for two, £25 for one and £15 in winter, with an accessible wheelyboat at £16 for wheelchair users and £35 for others. Life jackets or buoyancy aids must be worn in the boats and can be hired for £5.
Each permit allows one rod, with no treble hooks, no lead of any kind including in fly dressings, no ground bait, swim feeders, sweetcorn or maggots, and wading no deeper than the thigh. No fishing is allowed from the jetty, in front of the visitor centre or near the dam, the fish farm and the nature reserve. Every angler hands in a catch return after each visit. Fishing stops for about fifteen days each March for restocking. The reservoir also has winter pike fishing, which this page does not cover. The sat nav postcode is LL21 9TT. The position shown is approximate, at the visitor centre.
