About Newbridge Beat
Newbridge is the first beat on the Taw system, which is the single most useful thing to know about it. Every salmon and sea trout running the river passes through here before any water upstream sees them, and big tides keep pushing fresh fish in through the season.
There are nine holding pools and they have produced salmon to 20lb in recent years, with the larger sea trout tending to run earlier in the season. The association owns the left bank downstream of the bridge for a little over two miles to the next road bridge, and the right bank as far as the bend before Big Pit, about 400 yards.
In low water it also holds a good stock of wild brown trout, and these are the fish most visitors miss. They are worth going for on the right tackle, with dry flies and nymphs both bringing results. The beat is patrolled and protected by the Environment Agency.
