About Pen-y-fan Pond
Pen-y-fan Pond at Oakdale is one of the last remaining canal feeder reservoirs in Wales, and the club runs it as a fly fishing water. It is stocked with rainbow and blue trout, and the club says it also holds very large crayfish feeding brown trout. There are gradual sloping banks on the north and east sides that the club describes as ideal for wading, and open spaces around the lake that make it a good place for anglers new to fly fishing. The club suggests it for a long day or a couple of hours in the evening.
Fishing is fly only, from the bank, with a landing net compulsory and no boats. The pond is limited to 30 member rods at any one time. All brown trout are returned. The club’s 2026 day ticket is £22 for two fish: catch and release is allowed until the second fish is killed, then fishing stops, and any fish kept must be over 12 inches. Annual members take up to three fish. Tickets are sold on the club’s website or at Green’s Fishing Tackle in Pontllanfraith. The position shown is approximate.
