About Pontithel
The Llynfi and its tributary, the Llynfi Dulas, have many of the characteristics of Usk streams, running red when in flood for example. The Passport says these small streams hold one of the highest densities of trout of the Wye tributaries, with plenty of fish over a pound, and a spectacular mayfly hatch. The Pontithel beat is about ยพ of a mile of double bank on the Llynfi, two miles upstream of its confluence with the Wye. This part of the river is wide and fast flowing over gravel and boulders. Being not far from the main river it holds a variety of species, but trout and grayling are the main quarry, with some large fish present.
Getting to the river is easy and the wading straightforward, though felt or studded soles are necessary. Some large trees washed down in high flows lie in the pools: tricky to fish around, but they make excellent cover for fish. The Passport suggests a seven to eight foot rod rated 3 to 4 weight.
It is fly fishing only, all species are catch and release, and dogs are not allowed. It is a Wild Stream beat: it is booked through the Fishing Passport, or fished on a Wild Stream Season Permit.
