About Usk Reservoir
Usk Reservoir is a remote upland reservoir of 280 acres, a few miles from the source of the River Usk, set among forest and moorland in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The Passport regards it as one of the best stillwater trout fisheries in Wales. Fly fishing, spinning and worm fishing are all permitted, and the western end of the water is fly fishing only. Power Bait or anything similar is not permitted.
The wild brown trout population is supplemented by stocked rainbows. For the fly, the Passport recommends standard reservoir nymphs and lures. All brown trout must be returned alive. Fishing runs from 8am until half an hour after sunset or 9pm, whichever is earlier.
It is one rod per angler for trout fishing, and anglers must stop when the catch limit for their ticket is reached or buy another ticket at the fishery. No fishing is allowed from the dam face, the overflow, the feeder streams or the conservation area on the north bank, and lead weights from 0.06g (no. 8 shot) to 28.4g (1oz) are prohibited. A 6 fish permit costs £26 and a 4 fish permit £23, with up to 30 tickets a day. A junior 2 fish permit (under 16) costs £9, and a child of 13 or younger may fish free with a paying adult on a 6 fish ticket, sharing that angler’s bag limit; this applies to one child only. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
