About Ynys-y-fro Reservoirs
The Ynys-y-fro Reservoirs are two stocked trout lakes of 16 and 9 acres just outside Newport, managed by Newport Reservoirs Fly Fishing Association. The association stocks rainbow, brown, sparctic and tiger trout and describes plenty of fly life, with buzzers, sedges, silverhorns, damsels and cranefly. It has two boats on the lower reservoir for members and their guests, and the water is open 365 days a year.
Day tickets are bought in the hut, which has a self service card machine. A non-member ticket is £23 for one fish to take or £27 for two, and fishing must finish once your fish are dispatched. A junior ticket is £7, and a child can fish free on a shared ticket with a paying adult. Each ticket allows up to 8 fish caught and released per reservoir. All brown, sparctic and tiger trout must be returned.
The association’s rules are written for fly fishing, from 07:00 until 30 minutes after dusk, with barbless hooks and a knotless net. Wading is not allowed, and dogs are not allowed on the reservoirs.

Rules and policies
Fishing rules for Ynys-y-fro Reservoirs
Fly fishing is permitted from 07:00 until 30 minutes after dusk. All permits are catch and release with a limit of one or two fish to dispatch, depending on the ticket, and fishing must stop once that limit is reached. An 8 fish per reservoir limit applies to fish caught and released, including dispatched fish. All fish other than rainbow trout must be returned unharmed, including brown, sparctic and tiger trout, perch and pike. Barbless or squashed barb hooks only, and a long handled knotless landing net must always be used. Spinning flies and swivels are forbidden. One rod at a time, no wading, and no dogs or radios on the reservoirs. Keep 20 yards from other bank anglers, and boats must stay 50 yards from bank anglers. Under 16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Sign in before fishing and record your catch on the signing in sheet afterwards. Read the association’s full rules before you visit.
