About Ynysllwyd, Aberdare AA
Ynysllwyd is approximately ½ mile of mostly double bank fishing on the Cynon at Aberdare. It is a medium to small river with some surprisingly deep pools, so the Passport recommends chest waders. A gravel bottom with some silt and the odd boulder makes wading not too difficult, but a couple of the pools are very deep and anglers will need to get out to progress upriver. As on any river in an urban area, some litter may be encountered. The Passport says the river has excellent habitat for wild brown trout, with plenty of cover and thick beds of Ranunculus weed in places, and the odd grayling may also be present.
The suggested rod length is 7 to 9 foot. This is Aberdare Angling Association water and exclusivity cannot be guaranteed, although it is very rarely fished by club members. Worm, spinning and fly are permitted for trout only. No dogs, no night fishing or overnight camping, and an online catch return must be completed after fishing. This is a Wild Stream beat: it can be pre-booked online or by phone up to 6pm the day before, and beats not pre-booked are open only to holders of a Wild Stream Season Permit. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
