About the River Ystwyth
The River Ystwyth, Afon Ystwyth in Welsh, is a river in Ceredigion with a main stem of about 20 miles and a catchment of 75 square miles. It rises from a number of streams, among them the Afon Diliw, on the western slopes of Plynlimon on the border of Ceredigion and Powys, and flows west through Cwm Ystwyth, Pont-rhyd-y-groes and Llanilar before it reaches Cardigan Bay in the harbour at Aberystwyth.
The valley is sparsely populated today but was busy in earlier centuries, when silver, lead and zinc were mined here from Roman times. The mines are closed, though seepage from old workings still leaves metals in the water, and Natural Resources Wales has set up a wetland near the old Frongoch mine to treat it. The landscape at Hafod, laid out from 1783, drew visitors including Coleridge.
The River Ystwyth is known as a sewin river, with some salmon and brown trout as well.
