About Llanilar Angling Association, River Ystwyth
Llanilar Angling Association offers approximately twelve miles of mostly double bank fishing on the River Ystwyth, from Pontrhydygroes right to the sea at Aberystwyth marina. The Passport calls the Ystwyth one of the premier sea trout rivers in Wales, for expert and novice game anglers alike.
It is a spate river that relies on regular rainfall through the summer. Fresh fish can run as early as May and carry on to the last day of the season, though the better sewin fishing is in the early weeks of June. The lower river in particular fishes well at night on the fly and by day on fly or spinner. It is a short river, so fresh run fish are caught along its whole length, which suits anglers who like to rove.
Every pool and run fishes well with a spinner given the water height, but the Passport rates the night time fly fishing highest. It suggests rods of #5 to #7, nine to ten feet long, single hook flies in sizes 8 to 4 (black and silver is a local favourite) and surface or wake flies after midnight following June’s influx of fish. Floating lines and sink tips are all that is needed, and wading is often easy over fine gravels.
It is fly and spinning only, with no bait fishing. This is club water, so exclusivity is not guaranteed. Dogs are allowed if kept under control. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
