About Aberystwyth Angling Association, River Rheidol
Aberystwyth Angling Association has fishing rights on 16 miles of both banks of the River Rheidol, from Devil’s Bridge to the sea. The Passport describes the river as one of Wales’s premier salmon and sea trout fisheries, with double figure fish of both species caught on a regular basis. There are around forty recognised pools.
The flow is largely governed by a hydroelectric scheme, which can make the river rise very quickly and unexpectedly. That matters most if you are night fishing, and it also means the river can go into spate on a dry summer’s day. Wading any river carries a risk, and the Passport says extra care is needed on the Rheidol because generating water can raise the level a good deal in a few minutes.
Fly, spin and bait fishing are permitted, within the specified dates. Salmon must be returned at all times, and an online catch return must be completed after fishing. Some stretches are fish sanctuaries where fishing is not allowed; the club rules say which. Maps are provided on booking. A day ticket here is valid for all other Aberystwyth Angling Association waters on that date. The club also runs a Ten from Ten challenge, catching a fish from each of its ten lakes in no more than three days. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
