About Afon Dwyryd, Maentwrog
This is Cambrian Angling Association’s stretch of the Afon Dwyryd. Its upstream limit is the road bridge near Maentwrog where the A487 crosses the river, and its downstream limit is a fence just below a small stream. The association’s page walks the beat pool by pool: shallow gravelly runs below the bridge, then Church Pool, a small pool with a gravel bank on the association’s side that drops steeply into deep water, the tree lined Grapes Pool, the long Electric Pool, and the Mud Pool, the largest on the beat, slow, wide and deep around a bend, where it says a fair few sea trout are landed every season.
The association calls the Dwyryd the only one of its four rivers suitable for fly fishing. It says the river usually has an early run of fairly small sea trout, between 1lb and 3lb, with night fishing as early as mid April, and that salmon fishing has declined in recent years. Prices for day, week and season permits are on the association’s permits page. The position shown is approximate.
