About River Wnion, Dolgellau
The Wnion is the largest tributary of the Mawddach. Dolgellau Angling Association fishes it from the lower tidal Junction Pool, where it meets the Mawddach, up through the town of Dolgellau to what it calls a narrow boulder strewn upland spate fishery. Sea trout are the main quarry, a number of salmon run the river and there is always the wild brown trout on offer, the association says, if you are careful.
The association’s day ticket covers its 13 miles of river on the Wnion and Mawddach and Llyn Cynwch, and also night fishing for sea trout, from the evening until dawn. Only fly fishing is allowed at night. All salmon must be returned and brown trout under 26cm and sea trout under 30cm and over 60cm go back too. The association does not publish a map or beat boundaries on its home page, so the position shown is approximate and centred on the town.
